The Southington Public Library strives to provide quality service to all members of our community and has taken steps towards being a Dementia Friendly organization. With guidance from LiveWell Institute and patrons affected by dementia, the library has taken steps to make the library experience easier for visitors experiencing cognitive change.
Dementia-friendly library cards, which provide longer loan periods on all materials (except new items), are available to patrons experiencing cognitive change. To utilize this card please speak with the Circulation desk staff and convey that you or a loved one is experiencing cognitive change or has dementia.
The staff at the Southington Public Library has been trainedto recognizesigns that indicate someone may be dealing with cognitive issues so we are able to assist them appropriately.
Resources
The staff has curated a collection just for people with dementia. This collection is located right near the Reference Desk in case assistance is needed.
The collection contains specialized fiction where the font, spacing and content are designed for people with cognitive issues. Other specialized resources are games, memory totes, memory kits, puzzles and painting sets all designed for people with dementia.
Other items in this collection include exercise, travel, reminiscence, and vintage television DVDs. There are many resources for caregivers also. Non-fiction books on dementia, caregiving, and other subjects related to cognitive change.
The Southington Public Libraryalong with Bread for Life and the Connecticut Chapter Alzheimer's Association hold a monthly GAP (Giving Alzheimer's a Purpose) event. That is a social event for people with dementia and their care partners.
We also hold programs relating to dementia. These could cover anything from probate issues, assisted living options, communicating with loved ones with the condition, etc.
